KEY WEST, FLORIDA – NOVEMBER 7 – 13 1999
World
Champions Again!
BOARDWALK RACING Teams
With MERCURY RACING
Completing their very successful 6-year commitment with
Pennzoil / Quaker State, Nicky Cutro’s Boardwalk Racing Team coupled with Mercury Racing this
week and captured the SBI Pro1 World Championship for 1999.
This event followed a two-race format in the frothy waters
off Key West, with Nicky finishing second on Wednesday and first on
Saturday, averaging 78.3 MPH . The margin of victory Saturday was enough
to clinch the title. ESPN-2 will broadcast this race Sunday,
November 28th, 8PM and again on Wednesday, December 1st, 1PM. Cutro handled the throttles
and substituted Factory Class driver Troy Hanna on Wednesday and Citre Shine (S1) driver Paul
Whittier on Saturday. Extra weight in the bow and drafting were the
"Key's" to victory in this race as the conditions were rougher that
usual. The storm course was shortened in the interest of safety.
Commenting racing with Team
Mercury ...“ This is a natural fit…” quoted Nicky “…we’ve
been involved in their research and development effort for quite some time now
and Key-West is always a great place to showcase our efforts.”
(The team is looking to secure a new national sponsor for the coming Y2K
program) “We had a great run with
Pennzoil / Quaker State, but with the merger…we’re looking for a sponsor that can make full
use of our marketing abilities.”
The
1998 – 1999 seasons have been outstanding for the Boardwalk Team. Two time
World and National Champion Nicky Cutro’s 17 years of offshore racing
experience proved nearly unstoppable on the national circuit, finishing at least
second place in all of their races and first place finishes in Chesapeake, St.
Petersburg, Lake Winnipesaukee, and New York.

The team took second place in the Pro-1 Division here last
year. This season, the Skater Cat has been outfitted with three all new Mercury
motors totaling 900 horsepower. On July 3, 1998 at Sarasota, Florida the Pennzoil boat set
the record in the Pro-Stock / Pro-1 class at an amazing 115.455 MPH,
breaking the six-year-old previous record. Their record still stands.
