Lake Winnipesaukee Compaq Offshore Challenge
Lake Winnipesaukee, NH
The quiet calm water of Lake Winnpesaukee was shattered by the roars of powerboat engines. The 1999 Compaq Offshore Challenge, taking place on Saturday, June 5th saw competition in the USA
1/UIM 1, Super Vee, Modified, Pro Stock, Super Stock, Offshore, and Factory classes. The difficulty of this competition was its location. The fresh water setting of Lake Winnipesaukee meant less buoyancy for the boats that raced on its surface. For the Boardwalk/Pennzoil Offshore Racing Team, confidence was high. Running out of Lake George, NY, and having won here twice before, they were set up and ready for battle.
In the Pro Stock class, Hooters P-1, Pennzoil P-70, Critical Lift P-38, and Dietz and Watson P-77 all answered the bell, but it eventually became a nail-biting 2 boat race. From the start of the race with the Hooter’s boat P-1 leading, the Pennzoil P-70 chipped away at the lead. Taking the outside route at first, veteran, World and National Champion throttleman Nicky Cutro teamed with driver Ray Akoury quickly outpaced the Hooter’s P-1. With great effort the Hooter’s P-1 managed to regain the #1 position, only to be blown away moments later by the P-70 coming from the inside. In the last leg of the race it was clear that the Hooter’s last-ditch effort to regain first place was useless. The Pennzoil P-70 with better control and maneuvering had taken the win. This is the team’s first win for the 1999 season and from the way things look, more wins will follow.
